Voltaire (1694–1778) was a French Enlightenment writer and philosopher known for his sharp wit and fierce advocacy of reason, freedom of speech, and religious tolerance. His most famous work, Candide, satirizes optimism and societal hypocrisy. Voltaire’s writings challenged authority and championed civil liberties, leaving a lasting impact on Western thought. His works are now in the public domain.
