Thomas Hobbes (1588–1679) was an English philosopher best known for his political treatise Leviathan, which laid the foundation for modern political thought. He argued for a strong central authority to prevent societal chaos, describing life in a state of nature as “nasty, brutish, and short.” His ideas on social contract theory influenced later political philosophy. His works are now in the public domain.
