René Descartes’s works are in the public domain worldwide. He died in 1650, long before modern copyright laws were established. His books have always been in the public domain. Let’s celebrate public domain literature!
René Descartes (1596–1650) was a French philosopher, mathematician, and scientist, often called the father of modern philosophy. Best known for the statement “I think, therefore I am,” his work Meditations on First Philosophy explores doubt, reason, and existence. Descartes also made major contributions to mathematics and science. His influential writings are now in the public domain.
