Linda Brent was the pen name of Harriet Jacobs, author of Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl. Her works are in the public domain worldwide. She died in 1897, her book entered the public domain in Europe in 1968 (life + 70), and in Mexico in 1997, the country with the world’s longest term (life + 100). Let’s celebrate public domain literature!
Linda Brent is the pseudonym used by Harriet Ann Jacobs (1813–1897) in her memoir Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl. The book, one of the first to be written by an African-American woman, details Jacobs’ experiences as a slave, her struggles for freedom, and her efforts to protect her children from slavery. The work is a powerful testament to the horrors of slavery and is now in the public domain.
