John Steinbeck’s Cup of Gold is in the public domain in the United States, and, under the rule of the shorter term, in Europe. He died in 1968, the book entered the public domain in the United States in 2025 (95 years from its 1929 publication), and it will enter the public domain in Mexico in 2069, the country with the world’s longest term (life + 100). Let’s celebrate public domain literature!
John Steinbeck (1902–1968) was an American author known for his powerful depictions of working-class life during the Great Depression. His major works include The Grapes of Wrath, Of Mice and Men, and East of Eden, blending social realism with deep humanity. Steinbeck won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1962. Many of his works are in the public domain.
