Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862) was an American writer, philosopher, and naturalist best known for Walden, a reflection on simple living in nature, and Civil Disobedience, which influenced nonviolent resistance movements. His work emphasized self-reliance, individual freedom, and environmentalism. Thoreau’s transcendentalist ideas continue to inspire thinkers and activists. His works are now in the public domain.
