Frederick Douglass (c. 1818–1895) was an American abolitionist, writer, and orator who escaped slavery and became a leading voice for freedom and equality. His autobiography, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, powerfully depicts the horrors of slavery and the struggle for dignity. Douglass’s speeches and writings inspired generations. His works are now in the public domain.
