Ernest Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises is in the public domain in the United States, and, under the rule of the shorter term, in much of Europe. He died in 1961, the book entered the public domain in the United States in 2022 (95 years from its 1926 publication), and it will enter the public domain in Mexico in 2062, the country with the world’s longest term (life + 100). Let’s celebrate public domain literature!

Ernest Hemingway (1899–1961) was an American author known for his spare, powerful prose and themes of courage, loss, and resilience. His major works include The Old Man and the Sea, A Farewell to Arms, and The Sun Also Rises. A key figure of 20th-century literature, Hemingway won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954. Many of his early works are in the public domain.
