Edith Wharton’s works are in the public domain in Europe. She died in 1937, so her books entered the public domain there in 2008 (life + 70). In Mexico, the country with the world’s longest term (life + 100), they will enter the public domain in 2038. Let’s celebrate public domain literature!
Edith Wharton (1862–1937) was an American novelist known for her sharp critiques of upper-class society and its constraints, especially on women. Her best-known works, including The Age of Innocence, Ethan Frome, and The House of Mirth, blend psychological depth with social commentary. Wharton was the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. Her works are now in the public domain.
